The Dalai Lama kissed a young boy and asked him to “suck his tongue” in a now viral video. The video shows a male child leaning in to pay his respects.
The Dalai Lama then kisses the boy on the lips, who quickly pulls back. The spiritual leader then clasps the child’s chin and the two touch foreheads.

After several moments, the Dalai Lama can be heard asking, “can you suck my tongue?” while poking his tongue out at the child. Apparent bystanders can be heard laughing in the background.
It is unclear the context of this video or from where it originates. However, there has been a strong online response to the incident.
One individual tweeted in response the the video, “if he’s like this infront of cameras, can’t imagine what’s he’s like behind cameras [sic]”

Another writes, “The fact that the Dalai Lama – one of the most prominent spiritual leaders in the world – isn’t trending right now for asking a young boy to “suck his tongue” just proves that we’ve entered a new era of utter depravity. They are ALL revealing themselves and it’s absolutely sick.”
The Dalai Lama has faced public backlash before and is no stranger to controversy. In mid-2019, the spiritual leader said that “if a female Dalai Lama comes, she should be more attractive.”
Again, this resulted in online backlash. The Dalai Lama apologized for his comments, saying they were a joke.
